Hey my little baby koalas. If you’ve been paying attention at all to my instagram lately you may have noticed that I have a brand new addiction — BONE BROTH! I know it might sound weird at first – what is bone broth, anyway!? And why can’t I stop drinking it?
Furthermore, it seems like the whole wellness community is yippity yap yap yapping about it lately too. Why is bone broth becoming the newest healthy and healing drink?
Well first of all, let’s get one thing straight, bone broth isn’t NEW at all. It’s a very traditional broth that’s been used for centuries, since the days of yore and yesteryear.
Second of all, I’m KIDDING about it being the new green juice so don’t freak out! Green juice has an equal place in my heart and has totally different benefits and nutrients and magical powers, so drinking both is a great idea. #whynotboth
Bone broth is just what it sounds like — a broth made from boiling bones (think grass-fed cows, organic chickens, wild fish — you don’t want factory farmed animal bones in your broth!!!) and vegetables, herbs and spices in water. Typically it boils for 12 hours+ (sometimes even up to 72 hours!)
We’ve been recommending bone broth at Dr. Lipman’s office for awhile now, and we’ve seen the healing benefits in our patients – mainly people with digestive/gut problems, but also hormone/autoimmune issues and more. We’ve even seen vegetarians and vegans come in and heal their digestive issues by adding some bone broth into their diets.
The thing is, bone broth is kind of a process to make, so admittedly I’ve never made it before and I still need to muster up the courage to do so. One time I almost made it, not realizing that it takes like 24 hours to cook – and I was not about to accidentally burn the place down by keeping a gas stove on for that long. I’ve heard it works great in a crock pot. :) I’ll make it soon. I really will. UPDATE! I MADE IT!
Luckily for New Yorkers, recently chef Marco Canora (of Hearth Restaurant in NYC’s East Village, pictured above with Dr. Lipman) opened up a bone broth takeout window on 1st avenue and 12th street. I’ve been there almost every day since I heard about it!!
The bone broth takeout window, Brodo, features a ginger-infused grass-fed beef broth, organic chicken broth, and the house blend, which is turkey/chicken/beef mix (my favorite one). It always has a line outside! Sometimes Marco is there himself serving the coffee cups of broth, and he’s just so cool and friendly and excited about it.
It’s catching on…
So what is all the hype about!? What are the benefits of bone broth?
Benefits of drinking bone broth:
- Digestion – Bone broth is one of the best things you can consume to heal your gut if you have digestive issues. Leaky gut, IBS, food sensitivities, you name it. Bone broth is rich in gelatin and collagen, which help to repair and heal the intestinal tract, soothe the digestive system and heal leaky gut.
- Skin/Hair/Nails – Who knew you could stop spending so much money on beauty products and just drink bone broth instead!? Bone broth contains collagen (the ultimate skin food!!), gelatin, amino acids and minerals that nourish the skin. With magnesium, potassium, calcium, glucosamine, and more, this broth is a one stop shop for looking (and feeling) your best.
- Joint Pain – If you have joint pain, look no further than being nourished and healed by – literally – joint cartilage. I know it sounds gross but it’s super healing once you get over it, and it works. Glucosamine is often found in joint pain supplements. Skip the pills, drink the broth!!
- Immune System – Bone broth is incredibly strengthening for the immune system. There’s a reason for that whole “chicken soup when you’re sick” thing, you know. Bone broth can help soothe inflammation in the body, with its incredible array of nutrients and minerals that are important for almost every bodily function. Sip on some bone broth next time you’re coming down with something and let the healing begin.

Here’s a great breakdown of all the nutrients inside bone broth.
Marco told Well + Good: “I want people with coffee cups and sip lids to be walking down the street sipping on broth—not coffee, not tea, not Gatorade- because of all of these reasons, and also because it’s f*cking delicious. There’s something so satisfying about sipping a hot cup of broth that I feel we all need so badly in our lives.”
Here’s me drinking beef broth, about to grab some green juice at my friend Jamie’s vegan restaurant. :) This pretty sums up my every-other-thought lately. Bone broth!!! Green juice!!!! BOTH!!!!!

Hi Jenny! Thanks for the great post :) I am a patient of Dr. Lipman and when he first recommended bone broth to me I definitely freaked out a bit (ok ALOT). As a former vegan it took me a while to accept this new way of life but the benefits have been incredible. Katrine sent me the link to Wise Choice Market (http://www.wisechoicemarket.com/) and I ordered bone broth there and have been enjoying it daily but you inspired me to make my own once I run out. Can’t wait to try Brodo as well. Bone broth is definitely a magical healing liquid and I look forward to more and more people getting informed about the benefits. You are awesome!! xo, Hilary

Jenny, hey there! I’ve been a fan of your blog since attending IIN a couple of years ago, and I’m so psyched to see my worlds/friends collide! I co-wrote Marco’s upcoming cookbook with him (and in my previous career, was his publicist for many years). Thanks for the book love! We wanna send you an early copy, if you don’t mind sharing your mailing address with me (you can reach me at tammy@walkerwellbeing.com).
Always excited when you put up a new post :) Keep ’em comin’!
