I’ve been asking around lately about people’s favorite fall foods. I expected “pumpkin” would be the winner by a landslide, but many people answered “apples” with a lot of enthusiasm. That being said, I thought I’d dedicate a little time to them.
We’ve all heard the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” I’ve always just assumed that phrase meant, “Eat more fruit. It’s healthy.” Well, I can’t just accept any old phrase anymore. I need to know WHY!
I found out why.
Apples are packed with health benefits, including…
Flavonoids: Antioxidants that boost your immune system, and can help prevent heart disease and cancer.
Pectin: Aids in reducing cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, and stimulating the growth of healthy bacteria.
Fiber: Helps regulate digestion.
Potassium: Necessary for proper nerve function and muscle control.
Folic Acid: Helps the body make new, healthy cells.
Vitamin C: Protects you from immune system deficiencies
Phytochemicals: Helps to slow the affects of aging.
Quercetin– Fights the free radicals that can cause disease in the body.
Ok, ok, I believe the old phrase now! It’s obvious that apples really CAN protect us from illness. And you thought they were just a tasty addition to holiday pies….
This was just a quick summary of all the magic apples can bring to your life. More info: Dr. Weil talks apples here.
Bottom line: eat apples. Put them in desserts. Drink them as cider. Eat them right off the tree. You may just save some money on doctors visits this winter!
Oh — and whenever possible, buy organic and local!
