Oh man. It makes me kinda squeamish to blog about things like periods. I know at least 3 men who read my blog semi-regularly (hi guys) and there may even be more than 3. But the truth is, no matter how much we don’t like to talk about it, our menstrual cycle has SO MUCH to do with the state of our health, so we might want to start paying more attention to it. I find myself talking about hormonal health here more and more because I think it’s so fascinating. I personally track my own cycle very closely now (here are the best apps to track it) and it’s been so enlightening. And for some reason, lately I’ve heard from a ton of women who haven’t had their period in months and can’t figure out why.
(Also, I should clarify, I’m not talking about losing your period due to pregnancy or menopause).
I’ll admit, I’ve never lost my period personally. Not that I can remember, anyway. But I have seen a lot of women lose it and then get it back with dietary changes. I won’t say that all of them were vegans…but ok, a lot of them were vegans. I have nothing against veganism at all, I’m just saying I’ve noticed that.
FYI, if you’ve abnormally lost your period and you’re excited about that, truly there is something more going on with your body that you want to look at here, so it’s important not to ignore it. Losing your period is most often about having a hormone imbalance, and our hormones affect EVERYTHING, PEOPLE! Ahhh! Really. Energy. Skin. Sex drive. Moods. To name a few. Hormones are serious biz.
HORMONE: A hormone is a class of signaling molecules produced by glands in multicellular organisms that are transported by the circulatory system to target distant organs to regulate physiology and behavior.
(Doesn’t that sound serious?)
My hormone queen bestie Nicole says, “your symptoms are a loud and clear signal that your endocrine system is out of whack — and it’s up to you to reset the way you do things, girlfriend!”
A couple of things that might be affecting your lost or irregular cycle:
- Your diet
- Supplements
- Medications
- Exercise routine
- Birth control history
- Stress levels
Obviously this is where I bring in Nicole — luckily for all of you period-searchers, she has a free video series about getting back your period.
Now. I can’t tell you exactly how to get your period back because I don’t know your health history — watch the videos for more info. But I can give you a few really good tips from Nicole on how to lower your stress level if you have a feeling stress might have taken your period away from you.
If that’s the case, try these supplements:
B COMPLEX
“I think every woman on the planet should be taking a B complex vitamin daily. The first reason I suggest this is because unending high levels of cortisol actually depletes vitamins B1, B5, B6 and B12 and secondly, because each B vitamin plays an important role in the body and almost all of them help us combat stress. I love Thorne Research Basic B Complex or Integrative Therapeutics Active B Capsules.”
RHODIOLA
“Rhodiola is a plant that grows primarily in Asia and Eastern Europe. It has been used for fatigue, memory loss and to increase productivity and mitigate the general effects of stress for centuries. What’s even cooler is that rhodiola has been shown to be effective for adrenal fatigue, lack of ovulation and irregular/infrequent periods! I recommend 200mg 1–2 times a day and you might want to try Gaia Herbs Rhodiola Rosea. If you choose another brand, make sure you’re getting Rhodiola Rosea that is standardized to contain rosavins and salidrosides.”
Ok my friends, if you’ve lost your period PLEASE take it seriously. Watch these videos to learn more about how you can get it back.
You gotta feel good so you can show up as that superwoman you really wanna be and take care of business!!! Healing your body is the first step. Let’s go.
Have you had experience losing your period? Did you get it back? Lemme know what changes you made!
