Last night I had the pleasure of trying out NYC’s newest chocolate cafe, Cocoa V (opened by the owners of vegan restaurant Blossom). As if being a chocolate cafe isn’t enough, this place is 100% vegan, organic and fair trade! I was in sweet, sweet heaven.
As many of you know, finding delicious, totally animal-product free chocolate can be hard. Cocoa V makes incredible chocolates, brownies, cake, cookies and truffles that have no butter or cream involved. Non-vegans and vegans alike will not believe their taste buds!
Here’s my semi-grainy iPhone picture – but you get the point. You can see the cute display of vegan chocolates on the tray. A very romantic setting!
From left to right: chocolate peanut butter bon bon, Cocoa V classic truffle, fresh mint bon bon, cashew cream bon bon, chocolate coffee toffee. My favorite was the peanut butter! My dessert date, Billy, LOVED the vegan hot chocolate.
So why choose vegan chocolate vs. conventional chocolate?
Vegan chocolate is:
-dairy, lactose free
-free of butter fat, cream fat and eggs
-free of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and other chemicals common in conventional dairy processing
-often made with natural, organic sweeteners
For more info on vegan desserts, check out this book from another NYC vegan sweet shop, Babycakes.
So if you have a sweet tooth that needs some love, indulge with less guilt and try some tasty vegan chocolate. If you don’t live in the NYC area, you can find vegan chocolate at your local health food store or Whole Foods!
Cocoa V is located at 174 9th Avenue (between 20th and 21st). Take-out counter service and dining room table service are both available.

Cocoa V was phenomenal and reading this post makes me crave that hot chocolate again!!! I think Jenny convinced me that I can eat these little chocolates and not feel badly about breaking my diet!! Maybe the coffee crawl will have to hit this place up!
