Hey my friends,
I’m sitting outside writing this in the dark. It’s 7:55pm here in California and it’s really nice outside- just chilly enough to wear a sweatshirt, but not chilly enough to go inside. My favorite kind of weather.
Today I’ve officially been posting a blog every single day for 67 days. THAT IS INSANE.
Some days, I find myself really struggling to come up with anything to write about. Or I think of something that I’m currently interested in and I realize I’ve already blogged about it before.
One thing I’m really learning from this 100 day project is that after I’m done, I’m going to commit my writing to a specific project instead of just committing to posting on the blog. That’s going to be exciting. I got over that writing block of posting frequently on the blog (you know, that feeling that everything you post has to be some “perfect article” or “great content” in order to be worthwhile). The truth is, simply sharing is worthwhile. Creatively expressing is worthwhile. Storytelling is worthwhile.
My friend Jamie sent me a quote yesterday, to which I responded, “YES!”
“We write to taste life twice.”
That’s exactly how I feel about writing. We get to taste life twice.
Often, I get ideas about which stories/concepts need to be “tasted twice” through writing while I’m running or meditating. For me, usually I get a feeling in my stomach. Like a little twinge of knowingness when the topic comes into my head – this is what I need to write about. Either that, or it just starts writing itself in my head and I have no choice but to get it out. Sometimes a quote will keep repeating itself in my head, or a sentence will write itself, or an idea will connect magically with another idea and form a topic in my brain.
Last night, the sentence that kept coming into my head on repeat was “I almost threw my phone into the ocean.” So I took it from there.
Tonight, I found myself Googling “what to write about” and I found one of the absolute best lists of writing prompts I’ve ever come across, from Alexandra Franzen. I loved every one. I’ve been following Alexandra for many years, she’s one of my online writing inspirations.
Here’s her awesome list of writing prompts for you:
33 prompts to unlock new blog posts and stories that need to be told.
Seriously, this is gold.
{you’re welcome} ;)
And thank you.
Love,
Jenny
