I was recently in a cab heading uptown when I saw a segment about the Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp.
It caught my attention because I’ve been looking for a fun workout. I went home to check out the details.
Turns out the signing up process is easy and flexible – which I love. You buy a package of classes online ahead of time and can sign up for time slots when it’s convenient for you. You can also pay class by class. It’s only 15 bucks for your first class and 20 after that, unless you buy a package and the cost goes down. You can even cancel if you get the jitters about it, up to 6 hours before the workout with no penalty fee!
To me, this sounded like a deal that I couldn’t refuse. I signed up for a beginners bootcamp class for 9am on Saturday morning and made my way down to the starting point, which happened to be the Manhattan side of the bridge. There was a group of people standing there and I asked if it was the bootcamp – it was. The trainer, Ariane, showed up and got us all psyched up for the workout. She assured us that we could take it at our own pace, and she was very encouraging. I was nervous but so pumped!!
The workout consists of running over the bridge and back (2 miles total) with multiple stops along the way to do various exercises – push ups, squats, lunges, running/jumping up and down stairs (at the Brooklyn side of the bridge), etc. It was beautiful and so much fun. Even at a beginners class, it was tough!! I felt awesome afterwards. If you’re considering the bootcamp, don’t be worried about your fitness level – you only need to be able to run for 5 minutes without stopping (and you can always walk if you need to). There were people who were in great shape and people who were just starting fitness programs.
The class is 1 hour long – I highly recommend it if you want to change it up and try something new with gorgeous views of Brooklyn and Manhattan – and with a trainer that will motivate you and challenge you. I can’t wait to do this in the fall (my fave season) when it’s a little crisper out. Let me know if you want to join me sometime!!
